I have an older Alienware 14 with 16 GB of RAM and a 64-bit processor. It currently runs Windows 10, but support has ended and the laptop does not meet the requirements for Windows 11. I also own a Mac mini, but I need a portable laptop for use at schools and libraries. My main applications will be browser-based, including OneDrive, Zoom, and Figma. Which Linux distribution and desktop environment would be a good fit for this setup and for someone relatively new to Linux?

Since nearly everything you plan to use runs in a browser, most mainstream distributions should be capable. I would choose a well-supported option such as Fedora, Debian, or Mint rather than picking a distribution randomly. If the laptop feels sluggish, use a lighter desktop such as Xfce instead of a heavier graphical environment.

Linux Mint is probably the easiest starting point, especially if you want a familiar desktop and lots of beginner-friendly documentation. The Debian-based Mint edition is a stable option, while Linux Mint Debian Edition is worth considering if you prefer a less Ubuntu-dependent base.

Your requirements do not point to one mandatory distribution, so hardware support and ease of use matter more. Fedora Workstation with GNOME or Fedora KDE would be solid choices, and Firefox or Chrome should handle OneDrive, Zoom, and browser-based Figma. Check that your Alienware's graphics and Wi-Fi hardware are supported before installing.

Debian or a Debian-based desktop such as Kubuntu could work well. KDE Plasma has a layout that feels familiar to many Windows users, and there are plenty of tutorials available. Just remember that OneDrive and Figma do not have full official Linux desktop applications, so you would mainly use their web versions.
