Which of These Three Builds Is Best for 1440p Gaming?

I'm choosing between three custom PC configurations for smooth 1440p AAA gaming at maximum settings. The main options are two AM4 systems using a Ryzen 7 5700X and either an RX 9070 GRE 12GB or RX 9070 16GB, plus an AM5 system with a Ryzen 5 7500F and RX 9070 16GB. The AM5 build currently includes only one 16GB DDR5-6000 stick because I plan to add another later. Which build offers the best overall performance and upgrade path? Will the 7500F and single-channel 16GB memory noticeably limit the RX 9070, and how much could single-channel memory hurt frame rates and 1% lows until I install a matched second stick?

Build 3 is still the best starting point, but don’t treat single-channel DDR5 as ideal. It can be usable temporarily, yet the performance loss varies by game and can show up most in minimum frame rates and CPU-heavy titles. If you can’t afford 2x16GB immediately, it will work as a short-term setup, but add the second matching module as soon as practical. Also remember that the exact bottleneck depends on the game and target frame rate, so no configuration can guarantee zero bottleneck.

The 7500F should pair well with the RX 9070 for 1440p gaming, and it shouldn’t be meaningfully worse than the 5700X just because it has fewer cores. The bigger issue is the single-channel 16GB configuration. It may reduce average performance and cause noticeably worse 1% lows in some games, while 16GB total can also become restrictive in newer AAA titles. I’d modify Build 3 to use 32GB as a matched dual-channel kit, even if that means choosing a less expensive case or stepping down to the GRE to stay within budget.

That’s the key tradeoff: keeping the RX 9070 is nice, but stable dual-channel 32GB memory is more important than having the highest GPU tier while running only one stick.

There’s no such thing as a completely bottleneck-free PC. Some games will be CPU-limited while others will be GPU-limited, depending on resolution, settings, and frame rate. Of these choices, Build 3 is the strongest platform because AM5 gives you a better upgrade path and the RX 9070 is the faster GPU option. However, I would avoid running it with one memory stick if possible. Buy a matched 2x16GB DDR5 kit now, or replace the original stick later rather than mixing separate modules and risking compatibility or stability problems.
