I'm planning to build a PC gradually by buying parts during sales, and I'm also open to starting with a budget system and upgrading it in a few years. I know no computer is truly buy-it-for-life, but I'd like to choose components that can survive several builds or even decades where practical.
The main parts I'm considering are the case, power supply, and CPU cooler. For the case, I'm looking at the Fractal Design Meshify 3 Ambience Pro, which costs around C$310 here. Is it worth the price, or are there better long-term options?
I already bought a Corsair RM850e. Was that a reasonable choice, or would a higher-wattage or higher-tier power supply have been better?
For cooling, I'm interested in a conventional air cooler rather than a low-profile small-form-factor model. I'd appreciate recommendations for a cooler that can be reused across multiple CPU and motherboard upgrades. I'm also interested in any other components that make sense from a long-term, repairable, or reusable perspective.

Cases themselves generally don’t wear out, so choose one you like with good ventilation, sturdy construction, sensible layouts, and room for future hardware. Fans, filters, and sometimes front-panel components are what may need replacement. You could buy a less expensive case and fit it with quality replacement fans later instead of paying a premium solely for the original fan package.
Try not to buy every part years before the build. Hardware prices, standards, and availability change, and research that is accurate today may be outdated when you actually assemble the system. It makes sense to buy a case or power supply early if you find a good deal, but the motherboard, CPU, memory, and graphics card should be selected as a compatible group when you’re ready to build. A realistic useful lifespan is often around five to ten years, even if the case, cooler, and power supply continue working longer.
Your RM850e is a sensible power supply and should be perfectly adequate unless you already know you’ll be running an unusually power-hungry future graphics card. A reputable, high-quality unit with the right modern connectors matters more than simply buying the highest wattage available. Seasonic is another strong option, but there’s no urgent reason to replace the Corsair.
For a reusable air cooler, the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE offers excellent performance for the money. Noctua is a better choice if long-term mounting support, build quality, and fan replacement are more important than initial price. Keep in mind that fans are the part most likely to wear out, not the metal heatsink.
Noctua is probably the closest thing to buy-it-for-life in the cooler market. Models like the NH-D15 can be moved between several systems, and Noctua provides updated mounting kits when new CPU sockets are released. The fans are durable too, and they can usually be replaced without replacing the heatsink itself.
That’s exactly the kind of upgrade flexibility I was hoping for. I’ve used Noctua fans before, but I didn’t realize they supported older coolers with new mounting hardware.

That makes sense. I’m mainly treating the build as a long-term hobby, so I’d like to keep the chassis, cooler, and hopefully the power supply while replacing the core platform when necessary.
