I'm putting together a €1,500 gaming-only PC and found both a Radeon RX 9070 XT and an RX 7900 XT available second hand for around €600. Which one would be the better buy overall? I'm interested in gaming performance, ray tracing, upscaling support, power efficiency, and how well the card will hold up over the next few years.

If you can find an RX 9070 XT at that price, buy that one. A comparison against the 7900 XTX would be more complicated, but the regular 7900 XT doesn’t offer enough of an advantage to justify choosing it at the same used price.
The RX 9070 XT is the obvious choice when both cost €600. The RX 7900 XT would only become more interesting if it were noticeably cheaper or if you specifically valued its larger VRAM capacity. Otherwise, the newer architecture and efficiency of the 9070 XT make it a better long-term purchase.
Go with the RX 9070 XT. At the same price, it’s the stronger overall choice: better standard gaming performance, much better ray tracing, improved support for newer FSR features, and lower power consumption. The main trade-off is having less VRAM than the RX 7900 XT, but for a gaming-focused build the newer card is still the better pick.
