Which X870E motherboard makes the most sense for my first high-end PC build?

I'm building my first gaming and work PC and I tend to overthink component choices, so I'd appreciate some advice on the motherboard. The options and local prices are: MSI Tomahawk X870E for $380, Gigabyte Aorus Elite X870E for $405, ASUS ROG Strix X870E-H for $490, and Gigabyte Aorus Pro X870E X3D for $540. The rest of the build includes a Ryzen 9 9950X3D, an RTX 5080 Aorus Master, 32GB of DDR5 at either 6000MT/s or 6400MT/s, and 4TB plus 2TB of storage. I also do filmmaking professionally, so having plenty of useful ports and connectivity matters. Which board would you choose, and is X870E worthwhile for this build compared with a cheaper B850 option?

Before spending $380 or more, check whether you truly need X870E. The chipset itself may not provide a meaningful performance benefit for this CPU and GPU, and a good B850 board could be enough. For this build, both SSDs may still get direct CPU-connected lanes on a suitable B850 board, so you could save money without giving up much practical performance.

I do filmmaking professionally, so the extra ports and connectivity are important to me. That’s the main reason I was looking at the higher-end boards.

That makes sense, but it’s still worth listing the exact ports and devices you need. A well-equipped B850 board may provide them, while a more expensive X870E model could include features you’ll never use. Also, DDR5-6000 is usually the safer choice for AM5 unless your specific kit and memory controller are proven stable at 6400.

The Gigabyte board would pair nicely with your Aorus graphics card, but I wouldn’t choose a motherboard based only on matching brands. Compare the rear I/O, USB options, networking, M.2 layout, and VRM features, then pick the least expensive board that covers everything you actually need.
