I'm setting up my first customized Sway desktop on Arch Linux. Sway itself is working, and other changes in my configuration take effect, but the gaps between tiled windows aren't visible. I currently have this in my config:
#gaps
gaps inner 8px
gaps outer 4px
I expected to see the wallpaper between neighboring windows and around the outer edges. What should I change or check?

The configuration location matters too. Make sure you’re editing your user config at ~/.config/sway/config, not the untouched example under /etc/sway/. Since your other customizations work, the file is probably being loaded correctly, but you can still check for syntax errors and reload Sway after changing the lines.
Sway’s gap values should be plain numbers rather than values with a px suffix. Try:
gaps inner 8
gaps outer 4
Then reload Sway with your usual reload command. The gaps should reveal the desktop background between tiled windows.
Also check whether gaps have been disabled elsewhere in the config. A setting such as `gaps_invisible yes` can hide the empty space, and workspace-specific or output-specific rules may override the global values. Search the config for other `gaps` lines and try `gaps_invisible no` if necessary.
