My account was showing about 15.3 GB used, so I deleted some Google Photos items and a few videos. The usage briefly dropped back to 15 GB, but later increased to 16 GB even though I didn't upload anything, change settings, switch networks, or press any backup controls. It has stayed there for several days. I checked Google One, Google Drive, and Google Photos, but none of them clearly show what caused the extra usage. I also haven't received any unusual emails, although I do use WhatsApp and wonder whether a backup or another service could have started using storage automatically. What could explain this increase, and how can I identify what is taking up the space?

The shared storage limit usually includes Gmail, Google Drive, Google Photos, and some device or app backups—not just photos. Gmail messages and especially attachments count even if you didn’t receive anything at the exact moment the number changed. Check each service’s storage breakdown and search Gmail for large attachments, such as messages larger than 10 MB. Also remember that deleted Photos and Drive files can remain in the trash until it is emptied, and storage figures can change while Google recalculates usage.
A jump like this does not necessarily mean new files were uploaded while you were watching. Storage totals can update late, and deleting files may take time to be reflected consistently across Google’s services. Open the storage manager, inspect the categories individually, and empty the Photos, Drive, and Gmail trash if you are certain you no longer need those items. You can also check device backups and WhatsApp backup settings, since an existing backup may appear in the account’s storage even if it was not created manually at that moment.
I checked the storage breakdown, but it still wasn’t obvious which item caused the increase. I’ll recheck the trash folders and backup section and give the usage display more time to refresh.
