I received a notification from my Xfinity internet equipment saying that a new MSI laptop had connected to my network through a wired Ethernet connection. I don't own an MSI laptop, and I checked the modem and router in the closet without finding any unfamiliar device or cable connected. The router's active-device list only shows my TV, work laptop, desktop, and phones, and the supposed MSI laptop doesn't appear there or in the offline-device list. The name shown by the app may not be reliable. Routers and provider apps identify devices using information like the MAC address, hostname, or manufacturer lookup, and an existing device can occasionally be labeled as MSI or appear as a new device after its network identity changes. Check the router’s connected-device page directly rather than relying only on the notification.
I received the same kind of alert recently, which makes a bug or recurring false alert seem plausible. I’d watch the router’s real-time device list and review the event logs if available.
