I recently dual-booted Linux Mint on an older laptop and expected it to feel faster because it uses far less RAM than Windows 11. Surprisingly, Windows still feels smoother, especially during normal desktop use. I'm not very technical, so I'm wondering what might be causing the difference and what I can do to optimize Linux. The laptop's hardware, graphics setup, drivers, power management, and desktop environment may all be factors, but I'm not sure where to start.

Power management may be making the Linux installation run at a lower performance level, especially on battery. Compare performance while plugged in and check whether the CPU is being limited. Background updates, thermal throttling, dust in the cooling system, or a slow mechanical drive can affect either operating system too. If the issue is mainly animations or screen tearing rather than general slowness, focus on graphics drivers and display settings instead of RAM usage.
For an older machine, try the Xfce edition or another lightweight desktop environment. It generally uses fewer resources than heavier desktop environments. If your login screen offers both Wayland and X11, X11 may currently be the lighter and more compatible choice, depending on your hardware. Linux and Windows also report RAM differently, so lower Linux memory usage doesn’t automatically mean the desktop will feel smoother.
Trying a different desktop environment or distribution can be useful, but I’d check the drivers and power settings first.
