Why Does My iPhone 13 Pro Microphone Sound Distant and Cut Out During FaceTime?

I have an iPhone 13 Pro running a recent version of iOS. During one-on-one and group FaceTime calls, my microphone often picks up fans, air conditioning, and other background noise so strongly that it drowns out my voice. My audio also cuts out when I speak from farther away, and even when I talk close to the phone or raise my voice, I sound distant and unclear. In group calls, everyone else seems louder than me, even when they are speaking quietly or from across the room. The microphone sounds normal when I record videos or use Voice Memos. What could be causing this, and how can I fix it?

Because Voice Memos and videos sound normal, this probably isn't a completely failed microphone. Try FaceTime with the case removed, restart the phone, install any available iOS update, and test both Wi-Fi and cellular data. If the problem happens only in FaceTime, sign out of FaceTime and back in, or reset network settings after trying the simpler steps. A weak or unstable connection can also make your voice sound clipped or drop out, although it usually won't explain every volume difference.

Using wired headphones or a different Bluetooth headset can help confirm whether FaceTime is mishandling the phone's built-in microphones. AirPods would be worth testing once you have a working pair. If the issue continues across different networks and with every microphone mode, contact Apple Support or have the phone tested, since one microphone used specifically for calls could still be partially obstructed or faulty even if recordings sound fine.

During the call, open Control Center and check the microphone mode under FaceTime controls. Try Voice Isolation, Standard, and Wide Spectrum, since one mode may be processing your voice badly. Wide Spectrum can let in more background noise, so it may not be ideal if the fan is the main problem. Also remove the case temporarily and gently clean the microphone openings near the bottom edge and camera area with a soft, dry brush. Since your recordings sound fine, the hardware is probably okay and the issue may be FaceTime's audio processing or call conditions.

My mic mode was already on Standard. I tried Wide Spectrum briefly, but the same problem came back and it sometimes picked up even more background noise.
