I have a Dell Latitude 3120 with 8 GB of RAM, an Intel Pentium Silver N6000 processor, a 199 GB SSD, and Windows 11 25H2. I mainly use it for light tasks and web browsing, with only a modest number of tabs open. Under normal use, CPU usage is reasonable, but when I watch livestreams for a long time, the CPU eventually spikes heavily. This happens in every browser I've tried, isn't consistent every time, and doesn't seem to depend on the video quality. Windows, Dell, and Intel drivers are up to date, Defender is the only startup antivirus, and I've removed Dell's extra software. Is there anything I can check or change to reduce these CPU spikes, or is this simply a limitation of the hardware?

This hardware is near the lower end of what Windows 11 can handle comfortably. A lightweight Linux distribution or a ChromeOS-style operating system may use fewer resources and provide smoother long streaming sessions. Before changing operating systems, though, it’s worth checking Task Manager, temperatures, power settings, and hardware acceleration so you can identify whether there’s a specific fault.
Since the issue appears with every browser and only after extended streaming, it may be related to hardware video acceleration, a graphics driver problem, or the browser’s video decoder rather than the stream quality. Try toggling hardware acceleration off, then on again, in the browser settings and restart the browser after each change. While testing, compare the browser’s CPU usage with the total system usage in Task Manager.
The N6000 is a fairly limited processor, so background work such as Windows maintenance, updates, indexing, or security scans could become noticeable while a stream is running. The next time it happens, open Task Manager and sort by CPU usage to see whether the browser itself is responsible or whether another process is spiking. Also check the laptop’s temperatures and clock speed, since heat or power throttling can make a small CPU work much harder.
