I recently bought a second-hand Panasonic RX-D29. Whenever I insert a music CD, it tries to read it for a few seconds and then reports that no disc is present. It also makes a rattling sound while attempting to read the disc. What could be causing this, and is there anything I can safely try to fix it?

If cleaning the lens does not help, the rattling may indicate that the disc is not spinning smoothly or that the loading mechanism is worn. Check whether the disc starts spinning at all and whether anything is visibly rubbing. A failed laser assembly is also common in older players, and replacing it may cost more effort than the unit is worth unless you want to restore this particular model.
The most likely causes are a dirty lens, a worn-out laser pickup, or a problem with the disc-spinning mechanism. Start by trying a known-good, clean CD and gently cleaning the optical lens with a cotton swab and a very small amount of isopropyl alcohol. Let it dry fully before testing it again.
You can carefully inspect and clean the moving parts, but avoid forcing the mechanism or applying lubricant directly to the lens. If several different CDs produce the same result after cleaning, the laser or spindle motor probably needs repair or replacement.
It does make a rattling sound while trying to read the disc, so I’m wondering if the mechanism itself is having trouble spinning it properly.
