My Ryzen 7 5800X consistently reaches 90°C and stays there while gaming, even in relatively light games such as Minecraft and The Binding of Isaac. This has always happened, and cleaning the PC and applying fresh thermal paste did not change anything. The CPU is cooled by a Noctua NH-U12S redux, and the system is installed in a Kolink Observatory Lite case with three front intake fans and one rear exhaust fan. The case has a glass front panel, so I'm wondering whether restricted airflow is the main problem. Could the cooler be insufficient, incorrectly mounted, or is this behavior caused by Ryzen's boost settings? I'm also open to replacing the case if that would improve temperatures.

Use a temperature monitor to check whether the CPU is actually throttling and what clock speeds and package power it is reaching. Brief spikes near 90°C can be normal on a 5800X, but sustained 90°C in light games is worth investigating. Testing with the side panel off is a quick way to separate a case-airflow problem from a cooler or BIOS-setting problem.
Check whether Precision Boost Overdrive or a manual overclock is enabled in the BIOS. Ryzen 5000 processors can boost themselves right up to their temperature or power limit, even if you never manually overclocked them. You can disable PBO or set a lower power limit if you want lower temperatures. Curve Optimizer undervolting can also reduce heat, but change settings gradually and test stability.
Double-check the cooler installation and mounting pressure. Remove the heatsink, clean both surfaces, apply a modest amount of fresh thermal paste, and tighten the two screws gradually and alternately so the cooler stays level. Make sure the fan is spinning and blowing through the heatsink toward the rear exhaust fan. If the paste pattern looks even and temperatures remain unchanged, the mount probably isn’t the issue.
The cooler uses two screws, and I tighten them alternately so it stays level. The thermal paste looked properly spread when I removed it, so airflow is starting to seem more likely.
A second fan on the NH-U12S redux may help a little, but a dual-tower cooler would provide more thermal headroom. That said, the case is still the first thing I’d investigate: three front fans do not help much if the glass panel severely restricts intake. A mesh-front airflow case with a couple of quality intake fans and one rear exhaust fan would be a better replacement than adding lots of fans to a restricted case.
The NH-U12S redux should generally be adequate for a stock 5800X, although the 5800X does run close to its temperature limit by design. Since the case has a solid or glass front, the fans may not be getting enough cool air. Try running the system with the side panel removed and compare temperatures. If they drop significantly, the case airflow is the problem.
Removing the front panel didn’t make much difference, but I’ll test it with the side panel off as well.

I haven’t intentionally enabled overclocking, so I’ll check the BIOS settings to see whether PBO is active by default.
