My PC takes a very long time to boot, and once Windows loads, almost everything becomes unresponsive. Trying to open a browser causes it to freeze, and even opening the Start menu can lock up the system. I don't remember anything specific causing the problem. Since boot times were already slow, I disabled some startup programs such as Wallpaper Engine and Teams, enabled fast boot in the BIOS, and changed the processor count under System Configuration's advanced boot options, but the issue remains. My system has an Intel i5-6500, Gigabyte B250M motherboard, 16 GB of RAM, an RX 6650 XT, a hard drive containing Windows, and an M.2 SSD that I intended to use as the OS drive.

It would help to know when the PC last worked normally and what changed before the problem started. Also, changing the processor count in System Configuration usually isn’t helpful and can be left at the default setting. If the freezes began suddenly, drive failure or corrupted Windows files are more likely than a shortage of CPU cores.
The hard drive is the most suspicious part, especially since Windows is installed on it. A failing or badly degraded HDD can cause extremely slow boot times, long freezes, and programs that never open. Check the drive’s health if possible, back up important files, and consider installing Windows fresh on the M.2 SSD instead. Disconnect the old HDD during installation so the boot files are placed on the SSD.
The problem could also be caused by damaged Windows files, malware, or another background process using all the system resources. If the computer stays responsive long enough, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and check whether the disk, CPU, or memory is stuck near 100 percent. However, given the slow boot and the fact that Windows is on an HDD, I’d prioritize backing up your data and checking or replacing that drive.
I agree—the symptoms fit a dying or severely slow system drive. Moving Windows to the M.2 should make a major difference, provided the SSD is healthy.
