A few years ago, 4TB hard drives could be found for around $60, and 2TB models were often close to $60 in 2020. Now, similar drives seem to cost $150–$200 or more, while some 20TB drives that recently sold for about $300 are approaching $800. What caused storage prices to rise so sharply, and is there a sensible way to start building a large data archive without overpaying?

Storage demand isn’t limited to internal hard drives either. Data centers also consume SSDs, flash memory, USB storage, and other components, so broader supply constraints can spill into the consumer market. Prices may settle eventually, but capacity-intensive products are especially vulnerable when enterprise buyers are purchasing at scale.
The biggest factor appears to be demand from AI and large data centers. They’re buying huge amounts of compute hardware, memory, and storage, which puts pressure on manufacturers and available supply. That doesn’t mean consumer hard drives are literally disappearing, but enterprise demand can definitely affect pricing and production priorities.
Some of the extreme prices may also be due to temporary shortages, retailer inventory, or unusually high markups rather than the normal street price. It’s worth comparing several stores, checking manufacturer recertified or used enterprise drives, and waiting for sales instead of buying the first listing you find. For large archives, keep important data in at least two copies and remember that a single massive drive is a failure risk.

I knew AI was affecting memory and graphics hardware, but I didn’t realize it could push up storage prices too. I was considering a 20TB drive, but the recent price jump makes that much harder to justify.
