I recently installed a new motherboard, Core i7-14700K, DeepCool AK700 air cooler, and graphics card. The CPU averages around 65°C at idle across the cores, but it quickly reaches 100°C during a CPU stress test. I removed the protective film, applied thermal paste, and remounted the cooler tightly with very little movement. Room temperature is about 28°C, so I'm trying to figure out whether the cooler is inadequate, the CPU is drawing too much power, or something else is wrong. What should I change to bring the temperatures down?

The AK700 is a decent cooler, but the 14700K can pull over 250W in unrestricted all-core workloads. A single-tower cooler generally cannot handle that quietly, so 100°C during a stress test is not surprising. Use a stronger dual-tower cooler such as a Phantom Spirit or AK620, or move to a good 360mm liquid cooler.
You should also check the motherboard’s power settings. Set a reasonable CPU power limit and consider undervolting or lowering the core voltage, while keeping the system stable. Limiting the CPU’s power can reduce temperatures substantially, although heavily threaded benchmarks may still run hot.
A stronger air cooler may improve things for normal use, but don’t expect it to keep an unrestricted 14700K cool and quiet in demanding benchmarks. Many people pair this CPU with a 360mm AIO and an undervolt or power limit. Also make sure the replacement cooler actually supports the LGA1700 socket and has adequate case airflow.
A 65°C idle temperature is somewhat high at a 28°C room temperature, but modern CPUs can briefly boost even when they appear idle. Check that the pump or fan settings aren’t relevant, confirm the cooler fan is reaching the correct speed, and verify the mounting pressure and thermal-paste spread. The main limitation still appears to be cooler capacity rather than a missing plastic film or loose mount.
