I recently moved home after graduating and powered on my Inspiron 5680, which had been unplugged for roughly a year. Since then, the computer has been extremely sluggish. Even basic tasks such as opening Chrome can push disk usage to 100% in Task Manager, while CPU and RAM usage usually look normal. CrystalDiskInfo reports that the drive is healthy. I have updated Windows and the drivers, temporarily disabled Windows Defender, and tried clean boots, but the problem remains. The system uses an eighth-generation processor, 8GB of RAM, and a Seagate ST1000DM010 mechanical hard drive. What should I check first, and is the aging hard drive likely the main cause?

Open Resource Monitor, go to the Disk tab, and sort by total read/write activity. That should show which process is actually causing the 100% usage. After sitting unused for a year, Windows and installed programs may be downloading updates, rebuilding indexes, or performing other background maintenance. Make sure Windows and your applications have finished updating before judging performance.
The biggest issue is probably the mechanical hard drive. A Seagate ST1000DM010 is a standard spinning HDD, and Windows 10 or 11 can feel painfully slow on one, especially while updates, antivirus scans, indexing, or browser activity are happening. A healthy status in CrystalDiskInfo only means the drive has not reported obvious hardware failure; it does not mean it is fast or free from performance problems. Replacing it with an SSD should make the largest difference.
The computer does have an eighth-generation processor and 8GB of RAM, so I will look into replacing the HDD with an SSD first.
The 8GB of memory may also be limiting, particularly with Windows 11 and several browser tabs open. Once RAM fills up, Windows uses the disk as virtual memory, which is especially slow on a mechanical drive. An SSD upgrade should come first, but moving to 16GB of RAM would also help if the system supports it.

Windows has been updated to Windows 11, and I have updated the drivers as well, but the disk activity is still unusually high.
