After starting my computer, memory usage is already around 9.4 GB and keeps climbing even though I haven't opened any programs. I tried ending processes in Task Manager, but many of them start again shortly afterward. My system has 16 GB of RAM, and I'm also confused because a game reported that I have less than 8 GB of video memory. Is Windows using virtual memory incorrectly, or is something else causing this?

System RAM and VRAM are separate. Your 16 GB refers to the computer’s main memory, while VRAM is built into or dedicated to the graphics card. If the game requires more VRAM than your graphics card has, freeing system RAM or changing Windows virtual-memory settings won’t fix that limitation. You would need to lower the game’s settings, especially texture quality and resolution, or use a graphics card with more VRAM.
Windows automatically uses available RAM for background services, caching, and other tasks, so a high number by itself isn’t necessarily a problem. Processes may also restart because they’re required services or startup applications. Windows virtual memory is stored on the drive and doesn’t increase the physical RAM or video memory available to a game. Check the Memory column in Task Manager and look under Startup apps for programs you don’t need launching automatically.

VRAM usually doesn’t wear out simply from age. Poorer performance over time is more likely to come from game updates, newer graphics drivers, overheating, dust buildup, background software, or settings being reset. Check temperatures and make sure the graphics driver and game settings are behaving normally.
