Why is Windows reserving 6.1 GB of my 12 GB RAM?

Windows 11 Pro 24H2 reports 12 GB of installed memory, but only 5.85 GB is usable and 6.1 GB is marked as hardware reserved. The system has an Intel Core i7-9850H, supposedly running at 1600 MHz, and Windows identifies the graphics adapter as Intel HD Graphics 500. It also reports only 2 cores and 2 logical processors, lists the manufacturer and model as "Default string," and describes the memory as four 3 GB modules. Maximum memory is already unchecked in System Configuration. I have not yet entered the BIOS or UEFI. Could a firmware setting be reserving memory for integrated graphics, or do these inconsistent hardware details point to another problem? What should I inspect in the BIOS, and should I test or reseat the memory modules?

Enter the BIOS using the manufacturer’s key, commonly F2, Delete, or Esc, and check the total detected RAM, CPU model and core count, graphics-memory allocation, memory remapping, and any maximum-memory setting. Load optimized defaults before changing individual options. If BIOS reports the correct processor and memory but Windows still shows the strange specifications, repair or reinstall Windows from an official image and check for virtualization or remote-management software.

The hardware information is far more suspicious than the RAM reservation alone. An i7-9850H should report 6 cores and 12 threads, and its integrated graphics should not be identified as Intel HD Graphics 500. Four 3 GB memory modules are also unusual, while 1600 MHz does not fit the normal memory specification for that processor. Verify the system directly in BIOS and with a trusted hardware-information utility. If those tools disagree, you may be looking at a virtualized system, altered firmware/SMBIOS data, or an unreliable Windows installation.

Check the BIOS or UEFI for an integrated-graphics or DVMT/frame-buffer setting. If it is configured to reserve several gigabytes for the iGPU, reduce it to a normal value such as 256 MB, 512 MB, or 1 GB. On a laptop with a dedicated graphics chip, the integrated adapter may still reserve some system memory, but 6 GB is unusually high.

Also compare what Windows shows under Settings > System > About and Display. If two graphics adapters appear, the dedicated GPU should have its own VRAM while the integrated one may use shared system memory.

Do not assume the 6.1 GB is all graphics memory. A failed or poorly seated DIMM can sometimes leave a large portion of installed RAM hardware-reserved. Power the computer off, reseat the modules, then test each stick and slot individually. Run a memory diagnostic as well. If the BIOS itself sees only part of the memory or reports odd module sizes, focus on the hardware or firmware rather than Windows settings.
