I'm upgrading an older PC on a limited budget. The motherboard is a Gigabyte AB350-Gaming 3, and I'm installing a WD Black NVMe SSD in the M.2 slot, which sits directly beneath the graphics card. I may eventually use a used RTX 3070 or something newer. Since the system is limited to PCIe 3.0, I'm wondering whether heat will be much of a concern. Should I add a low-profile heatsink or relocate the graphics card to a lower slot with a riser cable, or am I worrying about this more than necessary?

Don’t use a riser cable just to avoid this. Besides adding cost and complexity, moving the GPU can create clearance, stability, or PCIe-link issues. Some drives under a GPU sit around the low 40s Celsius at idle and may reach roughly 60°C during heavier workloads without trouble. If monitoring shows excessive heat, add a small heatsink or improve airflow.
NVMe drives can run warm, but a PCIe 3.0 drive under a graphics card generally isn’t a serious problem as long as the case has decent airflow. Many systems have the M.2 slot in that exact location. A basic heatsink can help, but it’s optional rather than something that requires changing the GPU layout.
The motherboard doesn’t include an M.2 heatsink, but I’ll look for a low-profile one that fits beneath the card once everything is installed.
It should be fine in the normal M.2 slot. Install it, run the system under load, and monitor the SSD temperature with a hardware-monitoring utility. If temperatures are higher than you’re comfortable with, a cheap low-profile M.2 heatsink is the easiest solution. There’s no reason to move the GPU preemptively.
That makes sense. I was definitely getting stuck researching every possible worst-case scenario, so I’ll install it normally and check the temperatures first.

A second-slot adapter is another possible fallback, but it may run at reduced PCIe speed and is unnecessary unless the normal M.2 location actually proves too hot.
