Will an RTX 5050 work as a replacement for a dead RTX 2080 Super?

I'm still learning about PC hardware and need to replace my RTX 2080 Super, which has died. Would installing an RTX 5050 be essentially plug-and-play, or are there compatibility issues I should watch for? The 5050 uses around 170 watts compared with the 2080 Super's roughly 250 watts, and the listed dimensions look suitable. I'm mainly trying to avoid spending about $300 on a card that won't work properly or is a poor replacement.

It should work in the same system as long as the card physically fits, your power supply is adequate, and the power connector is compatible. You’ll also want to remove the old graphics drivers with a cleanup utility before installing the new card. Just keep in mind that the 5050 is generally a performance downgrade from a 2080 Super, not an upgrade.

The main concern is value. Paying around $300 for a 5050 mostly gets you lower power consumption and newer features, while gaming performance can be similar to or below older cards such as the RTX 3060. If your 2080 Super is dead, a used replacement around $200–$220 could provide noticeably better performance for less money.

That makes sense if the goal is matching the old performance. I’m replacing the card because it failed, not trying to upgrade the system.

Check more than just the length and wattage. Confirm the card’s power plug, since newer cards may use a different connector or require an adapter, and make sure your case has enough room around the connector. Also check your motherboard’s PCIe support. An older PCIe 3.0 system may lose some performance with a card that uses an x8 PCIe connection, especially when 8GB of VRAM becomes a limitation.

Before buying the 5050, compare similarly priced alternatives such as a Radeon 9060 XT. Depending on local prices, an 8GB or 16GB model may offer substantially better performance, though switching from NVIDIA to AMD means removing the NVIDIA drivers first and installing the AMD driver afterward.
