I'm upgrading four identical office workstations for CAM/CNC simulation rather than gaming. Each system currently has an Intel i5-10400, an MSI B460M-A PRO with BIOS 1.60, 8 GB of DDR4-2666 RAM (which will be upgraded to 16 GB), a GT 710, and a 240 GB SATA SSD. I'm considering an RTX 5060 and want a sanity check on expected performance, especially whether the i5-10400 would meaningfully limit the card in viewport work and GPU compute. This is not an FPS-focused gaming workload, and compatibility is not my main concern.

Make sure the power supply has the required PCIe power connection for the RTX 5060, not just enough wattage on paper. A dedicated 6+2-pin PCIe lead should cover that requirement if the PSU is suitable. Lower-power professional cards are another option, but they can cost considerably more and may not provide enough performance headroom compared with the 5060.
The main question is workload-specific rather than simply whether the processor is “fast enough.” For CAM/CNC software, check how much of the simulation and viewport rendering actually uses the GPU. If the current GT 710 is already maxed out in 3D usage, a much faster modern GPU should provide substantially more headroom, while the i5-10400 may still be adequate for general interaction and CPU-side tasks. Moving to 16 GB of RAM is a good baseline, though heavier projects may benefit from more.
That’s the distinction I’m trying to make. The current GT 730 is already sitting at 100% 3D utilization, so I’m more concerned with clearing the graphics ceiling than with gaming-style CPU bottlenecks.

The PSUs already have a dedicated 6+2-pin PCIe connector rated for the cards. I also considered A1000/A2000-class professional cards, but the price premium is substantial here, and I’m not convinced a slot-powered model would offer enough headroom over the current GPU.
