I'm currently using an AM4 system with a Ryzen 7 5800XT and an RTX 3070. I play mostly esports games at 1080p, along with Forza and other single-player games that I sometimes mod. I plan to move to 1440p and eventually upgrade to AM5, but I want to buy the GPU now because I expect prices to keep rising.
I briefly tried an RX 9070 XT, but it gave me severe stuttering in several games, including Overwatch, and I didn't enjoy switching from Nvidia's software and features. I'm specifically considering an RTX 5070 or RTX 5070 Ti, not AMD alternatives.
I understand my current CPU will bottleneck a faster card at 1080p, especially in competitive games. My main question is whether a 5070 or 5070 Ti should still provide a stable, noticeable improvement over my RTX 3070, without becoming so CPU-limited that performance is worse or plagued by stuttering. I'm mainly looking for experiences from people using a similar Ryzen 5000 setup at 1080p or 1440p.

At 1440p, either card should work well with your 5800XT, particularly in single-player games. At 1080p, the CPU limit will be much more noticeable in esports titles, so the GPU upgrade may not raise average FPS as dramatically. However, it shouldn’t perform worse than the 3070 simply because of the bottleneck; you may just see the GPU sitting below full usage in CPU-limited situations. The 5070 Ti gives you more headroom for the eventual move to 1440p.
The main variable is the game and your target frame rate. In competitive games at 1080p, the 5800XT can become the limit before a 5070 Ti does, especially if you’re aiming for very high refresh rates. In heavier games and at 1440p, the faster GPU will matter much more. You can also use DLSS or increase visual settings when you’re CPU-limited, which shifts more of the workload toward the GPU. Based on your goals, the 5070 Ti is the safer choice for the upcoming 1440p upgrade, while the 5070 should still be a clear step up from the 3070.
I’m using a Ryzen 9 5900X with a 5070 Ti and the combination is good enough for now. I’d expect your 5800XT to handle 1440p well, although very high-FPS competitive gaming will still expose the older platform.
A similar Ryzen 5000 system with a 5070-class card can run 1440p games comfortably, including demanding titles with optimized settings. The biggest difference between the 5070 and 5070 Ti will show up once you move to 1440p, use higher settings, or play games that need more VRAM and GPU horsepower. At 1080p, don’t expect the same percentage gain in every game because some will be limited by the CPU, but the new card should still give you stronger minimums and more room for demanding graphics settings than the 3070.
I mostly want a stable upgrade now and plan to replace the rest of the platform later. I’m not expecting the GPU to reach full utilization in every 1080p esports game.
That’s the kind of feedback I was looking for. I’m fine with esports FPS staying around the same as long as the lows are stable and it doesn’t introduce the stuttering I saw with the 9070 XT. For other games, 120 FPS or higher would be plenty.
