Is there any credible information suggesting that games releasing this year or over the next few years will require more CPU cores, especially if the next generation of consoles has more cores available to games or brings changes to game engines and development practices?
I'm comparing the 7500X3D and 7800X3D. The 7800X3D costs about 1.3 times as much, and choosing it may also mean spending more on cooling. How valuable are its two additional cores for gaming, and possibly for light local LLM use? Would it make more sense to buy the 7500X3D now and upgrade to an eight-core CPU later if games actually start benefiting from it?

For a gaming-focused system, I’d lean toward the 7500X3D if it offers the better price-to-performance ratio. The extra two cores on the 7800X3D are useful for multitasking and a few heavily threaded games, but they usually aren’t worth a large premium purely for gaming. You could upgrade to a newer eight-core chip later if real-world games start showing a meaningful advantage.
Games generally scale with the hardware available rather than suddenly refusing to run below a particular core count. A modern six-core CPU is still a reasonable baseline, with the main difference being potential frame rates and frame-time consistency in CPU-heavy titles. Light local LLM workloads may benefit from more cores, but neither chip is a replacement for a suitable GPU or large amount of system memory.
Eight-core consoles have been around for years, but games that clearly benefit from eight physical cores instead of six are still relatively uncommon. Efficiently spreading a game’s workload across many threads is difficult, so I wouldn’t assume the next couple of years will suddenly make eight cores mandatory.
Console thread counts need some context. The previous generation had eight physical cores without simultaneous multithreading, while current consoles have more threads but reserve some of them for the operating system. Some games already make use of more than twelve threads, although that doesn’t mean every thread is heavily loaded. If the next consoles leave roughly eight modern cores available to games, broader multi-threading could gradually become more common, but it probably won’t create an immediate hard requirement for eight-core desktop CPUs.
That’s why the next console generation could eventually change the trend, even if most current games still run well on six cores.

That may be less about programming difficulty and more about games simply not having enough CPU work that can be split efficiently across so many cores.
