Will upgrading an unsupported PC to Windows 11 erase my files?

My 2019 prebuilt gaming PC is being reported as incompatible with Windows 11, even though its hardware seems more powerful than a laptop that supports it. I haven't confirmed whether the issue is disabled TPM, Secure Boot, or another requirement. If I enable the required BIOS settings or use a USB ISO workaround, will Windows overwrite or delete my existing files? I'd prefer to keep everything if possible, but I can back up and reinstall if necessary.

If the PC is genuinely unsupported, bypassing the checks can lead to update or driver problems later. Check the exact hardware and firmware settings before deciding. If you proceed, back up your files and understand that unsupported systems may not receive every future update normally.

I’m not sure of the exact specifications yet since it’s a prebuilt system, so I’ll check the model and run the compatibility check first.

Changing BIOS settings such as TPM or Secure Boot should not delete your files. An in-place Windows upgrade or supported installation workaround usually preserves your apps and data too, but you should still make a verified backup first. A clean install from USB is the option that intentionally wipes the drive if you choose to format it.

The safest first step is to run Microsoft’s PC Health Check app. It should identify whether the problem is TPM, Secure Boot, the CPU, or something else.

Before changing anything, copy important documents, photos, and other data to another drive or cloud storage, and make sure the backup can actually be opened. Also confirm whether your current Windows installation is activated so you don’t run into surprises after reinstalling.

Some people have completed the workaround as an upgrade without losing their files, but that isn’t a guarantee. If you want the most reliable Windows 11 setup, back up everything and perform a fresh install. Just remember that selecting the format or delete options in the installer will erase the existing Windows installation and personal data.
