Will Wi-Fi 5 Be Good Enough for Gaming on This PC?

I'm looking to buy a gaming PC for my 13-year-old and have found a well-maintained pre-owned system with an RTX 4060, Ryzen 5 5600X, 32GB of DDR4 RAM, a 1TB NVMe SSD, an ASUS Prime B550M-A motherboard, and Windows 11. It should handle games like Fortnite, Warzone, Valorant, GTA, Minecraft, and Apex at high settings. Ethernet won't be available at the PC's location, and the system only supports Wi-Fi 5. Could that limit the gaming experience or become a bottleneck?

Latency is more important than bandwidth. A good Wi-Fi connection might add a few milliseconds compared with Ethernet, but that is usually insignificant next to the 35–100 ms connection to the game server. The bigger concern is interference, distance from the router, or poor home internet infrastructure.

Gaming over Wi-Fi can work well, including for competitive shooters. The main issue tends to be occasional lag spikes or slower downloads, not consistently worse gameplay. A stable connection matters much more than raw download speed.

If the signal turns out to be weak, you still have options besides replacing the whole system: a better Wi-Fi adapter, a PCIe wireless card, or a wired connection through an adapter or other networking setup. Also, the motherboard model itself generally includes an Ethernet port, even if running a cable to the room isn’t practical.

Wi-Fi 5 won’t affect the PC’s FPS or graphics performance. For multiplayer games, the important factors are connection stability, latency, and signal strength rather than having the latest Wi-Fi standard. If the PC has a decent signal and isn’t too far from the router, it should be perfectly playable.
