I'm installing Windows on my first custom-built PC after replacing a five-year-old prebuilt. The boot drive is essentially empty, with only the Windows installer on it. I created a Windows installation USB and can start setup, but after the installation begins I get this message: "It looks like you started an upgrade and booted from installation media. If you want to continue with the upgrade, remove the media from your PC and click Yes. If you want to perform a clean installation instead, click No." Choosing Yes leads to a black screen and then returns to the same message. Choosing No tells me to download Windows again, but the process just repeats. How can I complete a clean installation?

Recreate the installer USB with a tool such as Rufus instead of relying on the installer to handle everything during setup. Download the Windows ISO, use Rufus to write it to the USB, then boot the new PC from that drive and perform a clean install. This avoids the setup loop and lets Windows finish installing before you connect it for updates.
Since the drive is empty, you want a clean installation rather than an upgrade. Boot from the USB installer, choose the custom installation option, and select the target drive. If necessary, delete the existing partitions on that drive until it shows as unallocated space, then install Windows there. After the first restart, make sure the computer boots from the internal drive instead of starting the USB installer again. You can also remove the USB once Windows has copied the installation files and the PC restarts.
