Windows Update Sends My PC Into an Automatic Repair Loop

After a forced Windows 11 update that took much longer than usual, my PC stopped booting normally and now goes straight to Automatic Repair. I tried toggling Secure Boot, booting from a Windows 11 USB installer, Startup Repair, uninstalling both recent quality and feature updates, System Restore, and several boot-repair commands. The scan reported "Total identified Windows installations: 0." Is there anything else I can try before doing a clean reinstall, and what might have caused this?

One person with a similar problem eventually got Windows to start after more than 30 minutes of repeated reboots and repair attempts, but the issue returned after the next restart. That pattern suggests an underlying boot or storage problem rather than a simple update that only needs more time.

The storage drive could be failing or becoming intermittently unreadable. Testing it in another computer or with a USB enclosure, along with checking its health, would help determine whether the update exposed an existing drive problem.

After trying the available repairs, I ended up reinstalling Windows, but I first copied my important files from the Windows partition to another drive using a Linux live environment. Thankfully, the files were still accessible.

If the Windows installation is still visible and the drive is healthy, rebuilding the boot files and running DISM from the installation media may help. DISM needs to be pointed at the correct Windows image on the USB, and the boot-repair commands generally need to be run in the proper sequence. However, reporting zero Windows installations can indicate that the partition or file system is not being detected correctly.
