Windows Won’t Activate After Replacing Nearly All PC Hardware

I had to replace almost my entire PC after a failed CPU upgrade damaged the old system. The original computer stopped displaying an image after the CPU was removed and its pins were bent, so I built a new system with a new CPU, motherboard, GPU, and RAM while keeping my existing SSDs. The new computer boots normally, but Windows 11 build 26200.8875 will not activate. Choosing "I changed hardware on this device recently" still reports that no license can be found. I bought Windows more than ten years ago and can no longer locate the product key. Microsoft support has not been able to resolve it either. Is there a way to recover or transfer the old license, or will I need to purchase Windows again?

If the license was never connected to a Microsoft account and the original computer is no longer usable, Windows may not be able to verify that it belongs to the new hardware. In that case, recovering the old product key from the registry or purchase records is worth trying, but you may ultimately need to buy another license. Keep the new key somewhere safe this time.

The important detail is whether your old license was retail or OEM. Retail licenses can generally be transferred to a replacement computer, especially if they were linked to a Microsoft account. OEM licenses are usually tied to the original motherboard or manufacturer system and normally do not transfer after a major hardware change. You may be able to retrieve a stored key from the old Windows installation, but that will not necessarily work if the license has already reached its activation limit or was OEM.

A Microsoft account can make hardware transfers easier, but it does not turn an OEM license into a transferable retail license. Retail editions are intended to move to a replacement PC, while most OEM keys remain associated with the original hardware. If support cannot locate the license and you have no key or account association, there may be no supported way to activate the new build with that copy.
