Advice for Premed Student Transitioning to Software Engineering This Summer

Hey everyone! I'm a premed student who's realized that my true passion lies in math and coding rather than medicine. I've got a background in Python, R, HTML/CSS/JavaScript (MERN), Postgres, C/C++, and even a bit of Rust. I've created a few side projects, including a protein database with a REST API and a demo social network, but most have been basic CRUD apps. As I only took one intro to CS class and haven't tackled data structures and algorithms yet, I'm considering my options this summer. Should I focus on developing meaningful projects and brushing up on LeetCode and DSA to prepare for summer internships in 2026? I attend a pretty good university (not Ivy, but ranked in the top 15 overall and top 20 for CS). How can I leverage this for networking?

You might want to reach out to biology faculty for projects; they often have data that's just waiting to be analyzed, and the field of bioinformatics has demand. Plus, summer is a great time to get involved in meaningful work!

While it's true pursuing medicine might mean more job security, if your heart's not in it, it's better to follow your passion. You could gain invaluable experience in tech even before med school, which is a long road.

Have you thought about combining coding with biology? Biostatistics could bridge your interests in math and programming, plus it's a growing field in R&D, though it may require higher degrees for many roles.
