Advice for Transitioning from Linux Engineer to DevOps/SRE

Hey everyone! I'm a Linux engineer with about three years of experience at a small software company, where I mostly handle client support, bug fixes, and a lot of teaching clients how to use Linux. While I've enjoyed working from home and appreciate my current job after 12 years in IT, I feel like I'm not progressing. The team's very siloed, and internal promotions are nonexistent. I want to focus on more internal projects, like application building or automating tools, rather than client interactions. I'm comfortable with React, Python, and Docker, and I'm eager to learn more about Kubernetes and cloud solutions. I'm considering a role as a Linux admin in a larger company that has a DevOps culture where I can get involved with CI/CD. What do you think? Should I aim higher for a DevOps role, and how can I make this transition smoothly? Any insights or experiences would be awesome!

It sounds like you might be aiming more for a DevOps position than just sticking with Linux engineering. The skills you have should definitely transition well into that area!

Exactly! Companies often look for DevOps candidates with a development background, but your experience gives you a solid edge.

You've got a strong skill set! With your background in Linux, Python, and Docker, you're ready for roles in DevOps or SRE. Keep applying and building your skills, you're on the right track!

It's tricky out there! Companies expect development skills even for DevOps, despite the tools being built for Linux. Just keep showcasing your informal dev experience—it might give you the edge you need!

Consider applying to Red Hat—great place for someone with your motivation and experience! I made a similar switch from Linux engineer to an associate there and loved it!

I just saw a position at Red Hat that seems interesting. Your experience there gives me a nudge to apply!

The job market seems tough right now. Maybe it's worthwhile to refine your plan while still working. If you're leaning towards Kubernetes, consider certifications to boost your profile.
