I'm building my first desktop PC after years of using laptops, and I'm looking for some feedback on my choices. My last desktop experience was back in middle school, so I'm quite out of touch with current components. I aim to create a system that will last several years without needing upgrades. Here's what I plan to use:
- AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
- ASUS PRIME LC 360
- ASUS X870 MAX GAMING WIFI7
- Palit GeForce RTX 5080 GamingPro
- 32 GB (2x16) DDR5 6000 MHz CL36 – Corsair Vengeance
- WD_BLACK SN8100 1 TB PCIe Gen5
- ASUS TUF GT302
- MSI MAG A1000GL – 1000 W, 80+ Gold, PCIe 5.1
Are any of these components mismatched or unnecessary?

Everything seems good, but you might consider switching the motherboard to a B850 instead of the X870. The B850 offers more storage options without reducing GPU bandwidth. Also, the MSI MAG A1000GL isn’t the highest-rated PSU at your budget. You could look for something rated A(+), just to be safe, but it's fine for now.
You might want to look into a different case and CPU cooler for aesthetics; I think the Corsair models offer better lighting integration. Everything else seems fine, but just a heads up, the PSU you chose might be slightly overkill unless you plan on major upgrades in the future.
I'd suggest going for a slightly slower PCIe 4.0 SSD but bumping it up to 2TB. You might want to consider adding an extra 2TB Gen4 SSD later for storage – that way, your operating system and demanding games can live on the Gen5, while you can use the Gen4 for casual games and media files.
That sounds like a smart plan! Keeping the OS and heavy games on Gen5 while offloading casuals to Gen4 seems efficient.
Your build looks solid! I recommend checking out pcpartpicker.com/list; it can help you keep track of compatibility. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D paired with the RTX 5080 is a great combo that should remain powerful for years. One thing to think about is whether you really need Gen5 storage right now. Gen4 drives are still really fast and could save you some cash, but if budget isn't a concern, go for it!
Absolutely, I agree! The 9800X3D with the 5080 is a powerhouse. Gen4 SSDs are usually plenty for most users unless you're doing something very specialized.

I didn’t realize that about the motherboards! I always thought the X870 was just a straightforward upgrade. Could you clarify more on that?
