Am I Bottlenecked with My Ryzen 9 5900X and 5070 Ti?

Hey there, I've recently upgraded my GPU to a 5070 Ti, but I'm facing some frame rate issues, especially when streaming Apex Legends. After a bit of work, I managed to overclock my RAM to 3600 MHz, which improved performance a lot. My main question is whether my CPU is bottlenecking my GPU. I noticed that my 5070 Ti isn't utilizing much of its VRAM, and my CPU usage stays around 15-20%. I'm currently on an AM4 build, but I'm curious about switching to a different chipset, whether that's AMD or Intel. Any advice? Thanks!

What’s your RAM situation? Having 32GB is recommended to avoid issues. If you're good on that front, your recent RAM upgrade to 3600 MHz should definitely help.

Yeah, I have 32GB (4x8GB). I was worried when I couldn't overclock it at first, but now that it’s at 3600 MHz, I feel a big difference!

Your 12-core, 24-thread CPU is powerful, but if a game only utilizes 4 threads, you're only tapping into around 17% of your CPU. The 5900X may have some limitations with a 5070 Ti, but upgrading may not yield significant performance gains for the investment required.

Good point, I might be overanalyzing things.

The amount of VRAM used depends on the game, as it loads necessary assets into VRAM. Also, just because your CPU load seems low doesn't mean it's not being fully utilized; many games don’t effectively use multiple cores. Check your GPU usage for the best insight: if it’s below 100%, you’re likely limited by your CPU.

Thanks for clarifying that! I was unsure about how that all works.

Utilization percentages can be misleading. A lower GPU usage might suggest a bottleneck, but your CPU can still be underused if a game isn’t taking advantage of multiple threads. My 5070 Ti runs fine with my old 5900X at 1440p without much bottleneck.

Should I even worry about fully optimizing my setup then?

From what you've described, keep an eye on your GPU utilization. If it's below 95%, that typically indicates a bottleneck somewhere—likely at the CPU level in your case.

I believe my GPU utilization hovers under 90%, so that might be it.
