Best CPU Options for RTX 3080 12GB: Upgrade or Stick with What You Have?

I just got an RTX 3080 12GB GPU at a great price, but I'm torn about what CPU to pair it with. Currently, I have a Ryzen 5 5600G on an AM4 motherboard. Should I stick with it, or is it worth upgrading to a better CPU? I'm also considering if I should move to an AM5 setup, but DDR5 RAM prices are pretty crazy right now. What do you all think?

If you're able to find an AM4 X3D CPU, that could be a solid choice. However, if you're not running into any CPU bottlenecks, I’d say sticking with your current setup is a good move. Just see how the 3080 performs with what you have first!

Yeah, I’ve thought about that, but X3D CPUs are really overpriced where I live, going over 200€!

Honestly, I wouldn't invest in an X3D CPU, it's probably not worth the cost.

If gaming is your goal, a 5700X3D or even a 5800X3D are excellent options if you can find them. For work-related tasks, a 5900X might be better suited. With RAM prices as they are, AM5 doesn’t offer enough advantage right now, unless you're considering future-proofing.

Those options are super expensive though! The 5700X3D costs more than the new 7800X3D, and the 5800X3D is pricier than the 9800X3D!

X3D seems promising but since they’ve been discontinued, finding one is tricky and they’re costly.

Consider selling your 5600G and going for a 5700X. That might give you a noticeable performance boost without breaking the bank on AM5.

That’s what I've been leaning towards since going AM5 is pretty pricey.

How well do your current games run? Does your system meet your needs? Would switching to AM5 actually benefit your gaming experience or workflow?

Not sure yet. I just tested the GPU and it worked fine, but I’m waiting on a new PSU to really put it through its paces. My RM650x is a bit questionable.

Try running your games with the current CPU and see how performance stacks up. If it’s running well, you might not need to rush into an upgrade.

Alright, I’ll give it a go!
