Best Tech for Long-Term Video Calls?

I'm in a never-ending video call with my boyfriend on Discord, and it's becoming quite the setup challenge. Right now, I'm using an old laptop with a built-in camera next to my bed and an external microphone, but the laptop struggles with being on all the time, slows down, and sometimes loses its connection. I need suggestions for a better setup—maybe a tablet with a camera or a Raspberry Pi with a monitor? I'm also considering a smartphone, but I'd prefer something with a larger screen. I'd love to hear any thoughts or ideas on what could work better!

It sounds like your laptop is really holding you back. If it's overheating and slowing down, maybe try cleaning it out or repositioning it for better airflow. But for a more permanent fix, a tablet with a built-in camera could be great. Just get a stand to keep it charged all the time. Just note that keeping it plugged in constantly might affect battery life. That said, it sounds like you’re okay with a stationary setup, so this could really work for you!

For sure! I’ve used a tablet like that and it made a huge difference. Plus, they’re easier to manage in a tight space.

Honestly, if you’re on a constant call, it might be more about the tech you use than the call itself. Have you thought about how this might affect your relationship? Maybe look into simplifying things? If you're experiencing tech issues, but also considering a whole new setup, maybe it’s worth thinking if it’s all necessary? If your laptop isn't cutting it, maybe it's time for an upgrade or even switching to a different OS like Linux if you're comfortable with that!

That's a fair point, but living in a shared space can be something too! It’s not all about codependency, just different lifestyles.

For something more robust, consider using a network camera and an HDMI capture device. If you set it up right, you can have a solid and stable video call with great quality. That way, you can have a dedicated video stream without your laptop overheating issues. Just make sure your network can handle it!
