We're in the process of moving from Intermedia's hosted Exchange to Microsoft Exchange Online, and a key part of this migration involves copying the content from all our mailboxes. I'm curious if anyone knows whether Exchange Discovery will work on imported emails as well, or if it only interacts with emails that were actually sent or received?

The discovery tools for Exchange Online are pretty thorough. They'll search through all content in the mailbox, including deleted items, plus they can also check other O365 locations like OneDrive and SharePoint if needed.
Absolutely, Exchange Discovery can index and search imported emails without any issues. As long as those emails are in the mailbox, they're up for grabs for compliance and eDiscovery purposes!
I don't see why it wouldn't work. If the emails are stored in the mailbox, they should be searchable, right?

Actually, the current discovery system we use captures every email that goes through the system. It doesn't interact with the mailboxes directly, which means it won't work with imported emails.
