Hey everyone, I'm new to building PCs and I could use some help! I just built a system featuring a Ryzen 7 7700X cooled by a Thermalright Peerless Assassin. I'm noticing that my idle temperatures hover around 50°C but can spike to 60°C. When gaming, it typically stays between 75-80°C, but I'm worried because it hits 90°C during shader compilation or other heavy loads. I read that these CPUs are designed to handle temperatures up to 95°C, which might be normal, but my PC is pretty noisy, almost like a jet engine. I'm looking into options like undervolting and tweaking the Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) settings. Here are my questions:
1. Will undervolting actually help lower the temperatures significantly?
2. Will I sacrifice performance by using Curve Optimizer?
3. If I set a quiet fan curve in the BIOS, can I still keep my CPU temperatures safe?
Here are my specs:
- CPU: Ryzen 7 7700X
- GPU: NVIDIA RTX 5070
- Cooler: Thermalright Peerless Assassin
- RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengeance DDR5
- PSU: Be Quiet! Pure Power 12 750W
- Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow
- Motherboard: ASUS B650-PLUS WIFI

Undervolting can definitely help and pulling the heat sink off for a proper re-install might be a good idea if the temps persist. I wouldn't recommend running a 'silent' fan profile if it’s hitting 90°C though. I'd suggest adjusting your fan curves for better cooling.
If you're looking to undervolt, it's pretty straightforward on ASUS boards. Just go to Advanced Mode in BIOS, navigate to AMD Overclocking, and enable PBO. Then, you can set a Negative offset in Curve Optimizer to drop the voltage. Good luck! Just keep in mind to monitor the temps closely as you make adjustments!
I had a rough time with temps in my build too, but I discovered that even with decent cooling, the 7700X can reach high temps under load. For more control over noise, set your CPU fans to run at higher RPMs when things get hot. I’ve noticed around a 4°C drop in temps after tweaking the Curve Optimizer to a -20 offset. It’s all about finding that balance!
Your temperatures seem a bit elevated, especially with a decent cooler and good airflow! Have you checked your ambient temperature? Make sure you removed any plastic from the cooler plate and applied thermal paste properly. It's important to tighten the cooler evenly and ensure both fans are oriented to push air out of the case.
As for undervolting, it can definitely help bring those temps down without affecting performance much. Just be careful with the Curve Optimizer to not reduce your power too much if you're into heavy all-core workloads.
Honestly, those temps are pretty normal for the 7700X. It's known to run hot compared to other models. I also have a similar setup and when I game, my temps are usually around 70-75°C, hitting 80°C under shader loads. Just make sure all your fans are set to PWM to help with airflow.
