Considering an Upgrade from My Current CPU and Motherboard Setup

I've recently put together a PC with an i7 9700k, ASUS Strix Z390 motherboard, 32GB of 3200MHz RAM, and an RTX 3080 Ti. However, I jumped on a deal for an i9 10900k, an ASUS Strix Z490 motherboard, and a 500GB 970 Evo M.2 SSD for 170€ thinking it would be a gaming boost. It turns out the i9 is really just a slight improvement on my current setup with a few more cores. I only looked at synthetic benchmarks and now I'm considering selling these parts for a profit.

Should I make the switch to AMD with a 5800X or 5700X3D if I sell my current parts, or is there a better Intel option that won't overheat too much?

Honestly, the other replies seem off. Intel chips might not perform as well in gaming compared to the X3D options from AMD, especially if you're looking for price-to-performance in the long run.

If you have a source for reasonably priced AM4 X3D CPUs, please share.

Currently they are overpriced.

If you're looking to stick with DDR4 RAM, I recommend getting an Intel i5 14600K along with a B760 DDR4 motherboard. It'll handle gaming pretty well without the heat issues often seen with the i7 and i9 models, as long as you have a good cooler.

Yeah absolutely, not feeling the DDR5 prices. Afaik that specific processor has a nickname of "furnace". But I'll look into it, thank you.

Going to AMD with a 5800X or 5700X3D could give you a noticeable performance bump, but keep in mind that the 5700X3D is out of production, so it's priced pretty high right now. Your best bet for reusing DDR4 RAM is the Intel 14th gen route with the i5 14600K. It should work well for gaming, and if you get a decent cooler, you'll avoid the overheating issues.

Thanks for the input! I'm assuming NH-D15 would do the job then.

I'll have to research a bit about the prices. So far haven't found a single used listing for 14600K, but a bunch for 5700X3D.
