I'm curious about the performance impact of running my XFX SPEEDSTER MERC 310 RX 7900 XT on PCIe 4.0 x8 speed with my MSI MPG X870e Carbon motherboard. Currently, all four of my SSD slots are in use, so I'd prefer not to remove any. Will running my GPU at half the lane speed lead to a significant FPS loss, or is the effect minimal?

The difference between PCIe 4.0 x8 and x16 is pretty negligible, especially for a card like the 7900 XT, which has a lot of VRAM. Tests done by sites like Gamers Nexus show that the performance drop, if any, is minimal. For example, they found the difference to be less than 5% even when really looking for it. So, you shouldn't worry too much about it, especially considering your GPU has 20GB of memory.
Exactly! Also, I saw tests with new cards like the 5090 that showed only a 1-3% difference between PCIe 5.0 x16 and x8, so I think you're safe here.
With a 20GB card like yours, meaningful performance drops are unlikely unless you really hit the VRAM ceiling. So, you should be fine running at PCIe 4.0 x8 without it affecting your gaming experience too much.
While you’ve halved the lanes to x8, the impact will mainly be felt in gaming at higher resolutions. If you’re playing some graphics-heavy games, you might notice a dip in FPS. It really depends on what you’re playing. If you’re into titles like Cyberpunk or Fortnite, just keep an eye on your performance during gameplay.
I play a mix of stuff too, including Cyberpunk and indie games. But I also noticed some dips during intense scenes in those heavier titles, so it’s worth considering.

Just a reminder that if you're running into VRAM limits, that could cause a drop in performance. But with the amount of VRAM your card has, it shouldn't be a major issue.
