Does using an NVMe M.2 slot disable SATA ports on my motherboard?

I have a Z97 Gaming 3 motherboard and I'm planning to buy an NVMe SSD. While checking compatibility on PCPartPicker, I saw a note that using the M.2 slot would disable two SATA slots. How exactly does that work since there's only one SATA port connected through a cable that expands into six slots? Does it mean that all SATA slots will become inactive? By the way, I read through the manual and figured it out; everything seems good now!

Absolutely, make sure to check your motherboard’s manual. I know a friend who faced a similar situation: he had an NVMe that disabled one of his SATA drives. It turned out to be a simple fix by moving the SATA cable. Since PCIe lanes are shared for flexibility, it’s important to know beforehand which ones will be affected!

Ah, the Z97! Good to see some Haswell love. Just a heads up, some boards are designed to share resources like that, so you won’t be able to use all ports at once. It's best to refer to your manual for clarity on that.

Yes, exactly! There’s a limited number of PCIe lanes available. The first M.2 slot will take lanes from the CPU, and additional slots might share lanes with some SATA ports on the motherboard. Consulting the manual will give you the specifics on which SATA ports will be disabled when you add an NVMe SSD.

It’s pretty common for motherboards to share PCIe lanes. So, when you install an NVMe SSD, it can disable some SATA ports because they share this bandwidth. Definitely check your motherboard manual to see exactly which SATA ports are affected. It varies by model!
