Excited About My First DevOps Job but Feeling Unprepared

Hey everyone, I just landed my first DevOps position, and while I'm really excited, I'm also feeling a bit worried since I don't have much real-world experience. I graduated recently and studied concepts like Kubernetes and Docker. I even set up a Kubernetes cluster on Linode to get some hands-on experience, but honestly, I still feel a bit lost about how to apply that knowledge. I start in just a few weeks, and I'd love to hear any advice on how to prepare. I'm focusing on improving my bash scripting skills since I know that's important. Any tips or resources would be greatly appreciated!

Congrats on the new job! It's totally normal to feel a little overwhelmed, especially at the beginning. When I started learning DevOps, I focused on Linux and Bash scripting too. For Docker and Kubernetes, you might want to check out some beginner-friendly resources like online courses or YouTube tutorials. I recently watched a video on Kubernetes that was helpful, and even though it's a bit outdated, it's still a great start! If you're looking for specific resources, I'd be happy to share more.

Here’s a link to a helpful video I found on Kubernetes: https://youtu.be/7bA0gTroJjw?si=QRr5Bq3qkGRtClnG. It covers the basics quite well. And for starting with AWS, I understand it can be tough to find personal projects, but maybe try deploying a small app or service; it’s a great way to learn!

Thanks! I'm super excited too! I appreciate the resource; I'll definitely check it out.

Just remember, no one expects you to know it all right away. Embrace the learning process! Focusing on bash and getting familiar with the tools your team uses will definitely help. Don’t forget to ask your coworkers for guidance; they might have tips or resources that will help you settle in quickly.

You're already ahead of many juniors just by being part of the DevOps community! Keep engaging and asking questions. Stick with bash scripting, and don't hesitate to experiment with small projects. The hands-on experience will help bridge the gap between theory and real-world application. And remember, everyone starts somewhere!
