I'm in a bit of a panic here! My husband has an HP laptop that he uses for all his music work—recording, editing, you name it. He has years of important projects saved on it. With a baby on the way, I was trying to keep the bassinet cat-free by placing aluminum foil on it, thinking it would deter the cats. The laptop was closed and I thought it was powered off, so I set it on the foil for about 15-20 minutes to clear some space on the bed. Fast forward to the next morning, and now the laptop won't turn on. The charging light comes on, but after trying a hard reset (unplugging it, holding down the power button, etc.), it just turns off again. I'm freaking out that I might have fried the battery or worse! He didn't back up any of his work, and I'm so worried that it's all gone. Can anyone reassure me that it might just be a battery issue and that the data is retrievable?

I really doubt the foil had anything to do with it. Laptops typically have protection against that kind of stuff. Try removing the battery and power cable, hold the power button for a minute or two, then put everything back together and see if it starts up. It could just be a dead battery causing the issue.

I agree! It's a classic case of blaming the foil. Just make sure to check the battery first—if it's fine, the data should still be safe!
