Help Me Decide: Stick with AM4 or Upgrade to AM5?

My motherboard is failing, and I'm facing pressure to upgrade, especially with DDR5 prices soaring. I'm looking for some objective advice on whether I should stick with an AM4 setup or move to AM5. Here's my situation:

**Current Build:**
- CPU: Ryzen 2700x
- Cooler: NH-D15
- Motherboard: Strix B450 F WiFi
- RAM: 16GB DDR4 3000MHz
- GPU: Strix 5700XT
- PSU: Seasonic Focus Gold 850W
- Case: FD Define R6
- Monitor: 1080p 27-inch 165Hz

Given my budget of $1100 (possibly $1200), I'd like to use this setup for a mix of gaming and productivity, particularly with demanding applications like Photoshop, After Effects, and Premiere, alongside gaming titles like World of Warcraft and Apex Legends. I'm dreaming of a 16-core CPU for better multitasking and don't want to go back down to an 8-core chip. Here are my upgrade paths:

1. **Practical Path:** Stay on AM4 and grab a Ryzen 5000 series CPU.
2. **Compromise Path:** Consider an 8 or 12-core in the 9000 series with DDR5 RAM.
3. **Dream Path:** Go for a Ryzen 9950x or 7950x with DDR5, even if it's less practical.

What do you think? Should I stick with AM4? Maybe wait? Or go for my dream CPU? Any suggestions on improvements to the build would be appreciated!

AM4 still has legs! Upgrading to a 5900X or 5950X will give you a significant performance boost, especially since you're coming from a 2700X. I say stick with AM4 until you really can’t handle the load anymore—it's still a good option!

I’d recommend sticking with AM4 for now. A Ryzen 5000 series CPU would really boost your performance, especially for the kind of software you're using. Plus, prices for RAM are insane right now, so reusing what you have could save you a bunch. If your GPU is on the outs, that’s where I’d suggest putting your cash instead, but keep the rest intact if you can!

Sounds like solid advice! My RAM prices jumped from $80 to $300 as well, which is wild!

Honestly, if prices for AM5 go up further, it might be worth grabbing some used components. I got a great deal on some DDR5 memory this way! If you're not in a rush, keeping an eye on the market could land you a good deal. AM4 is a solid choice right now.

Exactly! I got my RAM for a steal too, just search around and be patient.
