Help! My M.2 SSD is Recognized in BIOS but Not in Windows

I've been having a major headache with my M.2 SSD lately. It was functioning just fine until I updated it recently, but now I can't access it. I get an error that says it's not connected. I called tech support and even tried switching the SSD to a different port, but that didn't help. I reinstalled Windows and reset the BIOS settings, changing the onboard device configuration to GEN3, yet still no luck. I have four years' worth of animation work saved on that drive, and I'm terrified of losing it. I'm at my wit's end and may have to resort to a pricey data recovery service. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get this drive working again?

Have you tried connecting the SSD to a different PC to see if it gets recognized there? It's a good way to determine if the SSD itself is faulty or if there's an issue with your current setup.

Your description suggests that Windows can't read or write to the SSD, even if it appears in BIOS and Device Manager. It might be showing as detected but is failing to mount, which is a common SSD failure mode. Might be worth looking into a professional data recovery option.

Check if you can see the SSD in Disk Management. Just right-click the Windows icon on the lower left and select Disk Management to see if it appears there. If it's showing but greyed out, it could be a drive failure.

It sounds like you might need to dive into DISKPART. Start an elevated command prompt, type DISKPART, and see if you can find the SSD there. If it's listed, you might need to set up partitions and volumes to make it visible to Windows.
