How can I improve my home internet speeds and connection reliability?

I'm struggling with poor internet speeds at home, and it's becoming a real hassle. I live in an older two-story house in a major suburb of Australia, and we have the wifi modem set up upstairs. To help with connectivity, we've added extenders downstairs, but that hasn't solved the problem. We frequently experience disconnects that can last for up to 15 minutes, which is particularly frustrating when someone is gaming on the PlayStation. I've seen my connection speeds vary wildly—anywhere from 0.5 Mbps to 80 Mbps! With no Ethernet ports available in the house, I'm looking for suggestions that might help. Should I consider better extenders, rearranging the modem, or something else? I really just want a stable connection throughout the day. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

If possible, consider switching to a hardwired Ethernet connection. It's often the most reliable way to ensure fast speeds and minimal lag, especially for gaming. Without Ethernet ports, you might explore options like powerline adapters that can utilize your electrical outlets to carry the internet signal.

You should definitely look into setting up a mesh network instead of using Wi-Fi extenders. Mesh networks provide better coverage compared to extenders and help maintain consistent speeds throughout your house. Depending on your home’s layout, you might need to place multiple mesh units to ensure they’re spaced correct distances apart to cover all areas efficiently.

What’s the advantage of a mesh network over a regular Wi-Fi extender? It seems similar to me based on your description.
