How Can I Land a Remote Coding Job with Limited Experience?

I'm about to finish my associate's degree in math and science and I'm preparing to transfer to a four-year program. My goal has always been to teach calculus or physics at the college level. Recently, I took a Python class and absolutely loved it, feeling confident in my coding skills. However, I'd like to secure a remote coding job for this summer. I've applied to a few positions, explaining my situation, but I don't have experience with SQL or other programming languages, though I'm eager to learn. I'm starting to wonder if I even stand a chance to get a job with my current skills, or if I'm just wasting my time. Any advice?

You might want to ask around your school! Sometimes they have job opportunities for current students, especially for internships or summer roles. They might be willing to give you a chance!

Considering your background in math and science, it might be worth exploring what non-CS degree holders face in terms of getting dev jobs these days. There's definitely potential out there, but you need to be persistent!

Honestly, it’s a challenging industry to break into without a CS degree or extensive experience. I’ve been trying to find a job for about four years now. Gaining practical experience through internships or entry-level roles right after graduation might give you an edge, but it’s often a mix of luck and timing.

Most coding jobs do expect a fair bit of experience, often looking for candidates with a four-year degree and relevant internships or projects. If you want to pursue this, I'd suggest focusing on building your resume and LinkedIn profile, working on relevant projects for your portfolio, and practicing coding challenges on sites like HackerRank or LeetCode. Those will really boost your chances of landing a position later on.
