How can I reset an old iPad when the Apple Account is locked?

I found an old iPad that I want to erase and give to someone else. A factory reset requires the password for the Apple Account currently linked to it, but I've forgotten that password. When I select the password-recovery option, it only says the account is locked. I also can't sign out of the old account because the iPad asks for the same forgotten password. What options do I have?

If the Apple Account is locked or disabled, youโll need to recover access through Appleโs official account-recovery process before you can sign out and erase the iPad. Creating a new account wonโt bypass the old one, because the device is still linked to it through Activation Lock. If you canโt recover the account, Apple may be able to help remove Activation Lock if you have valid proof of purchase for the iPad.
