I recently found an old laptop from years ago that I really want to boot up to see what files I have on it. However, when I press the power button, nothing happens at all. I'm okay with taking it apart if necessary, but I'm unsure where to start.
I'm wondering if the problem is more likely with the power brick or the battery. I believe the battery shouldn't cause issues if the power brick is plugged in. Any advice or steps you recommend for troubleshooting this old machine would be greatly appreciated!

First things first, grab a multimeter to check whether the power supply unit (PSU) is working. If that gives you a sign of life, you can look at the battery next. Given its age, I'd say the battery is likely toast. If you do manage to get it to power on after these checks, you're in luck! If not, you might need to open it up and look for shorts or any other damage.
Checking the PSU with a multimeter is a good move. If you're comfortable, you might want to open the laptop and visually inspect the components. Look for any swollen capacitors or signs of damage like burn marks. Sometimes just looking at the hardware can give you clues on what might be wrong.
Definitely check the CMOS battery too! It often leaks over the years. If you find it’s leaking, you should replace it, as it might be causing issues with power distribution.
Since this laptop is pretty vintage, I'd recommend digging up the service manual for it if you can. You might find useful troubleshooting steps or specifications there. Given its age, degraded capacitors could be a problem, and old batteries can definitely affect startup. Try removing the battery and see if it powers on without it.
