How Can I Stop Steam from Preventing My PC Shutdown?

I'm having an issue with my Windows 11 setup where Steam prevents my PC from shutting down smoothly. I always have to wait for it to hit 'shut down anyway,' which is really annoying. I'd like to completely remove Steam's ability to stop the shutdown process. If this means changing some permissions or settings, I'm open to that. I know I could just close Steam before shutting down, but that feels like a lazy workaround. So, what can I do to make it stop interfering?

Steam doesn't block shutdown for fun—it does it to protect your files and avoid any data corruption. If you shut down while it's still saving or syncing your game files, you might lose progress. So it’s kind of important! That said, if you really want to stop it from preventing shutdown, you might want to look into changing the AutoEndTasks setting in the registry. Just be careful with it since forcing programs to close can lead to issues.

It sounds like Steam is waiting to finish whatever tasks it's doing. Normally, when you try to shut down your PC, Windows checks with all open services and apps. If they aren't ready to close, it can delay the shutdown. I suggest doing what I do: put your PC in sleep mode if you want a quick exit, or look into that AutoEndTasks registry tweak if you’re set on force-closing Steam.

Why not close Steam before shutting down? If you're shutting down, it’s probably because you don’t need the system on. Just walk away and let it shut down in peace! Plus, it only takes like a few seconds if something else is holding it up.
