I recently got a new laptop and I want to move everything from my old laptop to the new one. The last time I did this, I used the Windows backup app and it was super simple—just paired the two computers and it handled everything. However, I can't find this option during the setup of my new laptop. I also tried to restore from a backup after setup, but it seems to do nothing and just loads Windows with nothing installed. Is there a way to transfer everything all at once like I did before?

You're actually not doing anything wrong! The new Windows Backup feature mainly restores settings, OneDrive files, and store apps, but it won't bring over your traditional desktop programs. To get those installed apps back, make sure you're signed in with the same Microsoft account. For a full transfer, you might want to look into a migration tool like Laplink PCmover. Alternatively, creating a disk image from your old PC using something like Macrium Reflect and restoring it would work too. Otherwise, it’s just a matter of copying files and reinstalling software manually.
I get what you're saying about PCmover being $60; that's a bummer! Unfortunately, there are not many free tools that can do a complete transfer like that. Some people recommend using Windows File Transfer or a simple external hard drive to move personal files. For applications, you’ll likely still need to reinstall them. It's more of a hassle, but at least you can save some money!
